On September 16, 2004, a wood waste-fired boiler plant - the first demonstration site
designed under the Project of the Government of the Republic of Belarus,
the UN Development Programme/the Global Environment Facility (UNDP/GEF) entitled
"Biomass Energy for Heating and Hot Water Supply in the Republic of Belarus"
was officially put into operation at PC OOO Volat-1.
Number of employees - 270.
The demonstration boiler house operates 2 automated wood-waste hot-water boilers of 1 MW each.
The boiler house is placed in a new separate building and is being built to replace an electric boiler house that occupied production premises.
The supply and installation of automated equipment for the boiler house is done by JCS "BelKotlMash" (town of Beshenkovishi, Vitebsk Oblast), the company that won the tender open for enterprises of Belarus and the Czech Republic.
In accordance with the bidding terms of reference, automated wood-waste boilers with the efficiency no less than 80 % is installed in the boiler house.
The core fuel is sawdust (70%), wood chips (30%) with humidity content around 40%.
Equipment accessories (chemical water treatment, pumps, heat-exchanging unit, control-and-stop valves).
The deadline for the boiler house to become fully operational - July 2004.
New boiler house benefits:
- Natural gas savings due to energy savings of up to 1,000 tce a year
- Reduction of CO2 emissions by 2,000 tons a year
- Production growth
- New jobs
Demonstration and replication potential:
There are approximately 3,350 boiler houses of 0,5 to 3 MW in the country. Nearly 35% of them are fired by gas, 50% - by heavy oil, and circa 15% - by coal, peat, or wood fuel.
