Objective
The primary objective of this project is to reduce the GHG emissions of Belarus by removing the barriers to economically feasible wood and wood-waste utilization for heat, hot water and power supply. Target areas include district heating for residential, industrial and public buildings such as schools, hospitals and sanatoriums.
There are some 10,000 boiler houses that provide district heating and hot water supply burning heavy oil, diesel natural gas and coal. Since most of the boilers are frequently inefficient because of age (commonly 20 to 30 years old), the combustion of these fossil fuels leads to increased GHG and other harmful substance emissions.
Project objectives are to strengthen institutional capacity to support biomass energy projects, overcome negative perceptions of biomass energy, establish a track record for investments in sustainable biomass energy projects, including both fuel supply and demand.
