A major problem facing the global community is the continuing loss of
biodiversity. This loss is the result of insufficient investments being
made in biodiversity conservation and over investment in activities that
further the loss of biodiversity. Stopping the loss of biodiversity thus
requires a combination of improving existing financing mechanisms,
developing new mechanisms to finance the conservation of biological
diversity, and reviewing policies and practices that encourage the loss
of biodiversity. This conference will focus on the financing mechanisms
element of this challenge.

60 Second Interview
60 Second Interview with WBM 08 Speaker Ed
Lehrburger, Chief Executive Officer, PureVision Technology,
USA.
1) What is PureVision technology and what are the key challenges to
commercial deployment?
One of the essential elements of the PureVision fractionation technology
is to rapidly convert cellulosic biomass into its three primary
constituents: hemicellulose-rich sugars, lignin and cellulose via a
continuous extruder-based extraction process. We have perfected our
technology on a small pilot scale. The two key challenges we face with
commercial deployment of our technology is 1) being able to successfully
scale up our process, and 2) being able to prove the economics at a large
industrial scale.
2) How can you reduce the cost of cellulosic ethanol production?
One of the key factors in reducing the cost of cellulosic ethanol is to keep
the costs of cellulase enzymes as low as possible. The fractionated
cellulose produced from the PureVision process has very little lignin.
Our data shows that using this relatively pure cellulose requires 60%
less enzyme to achieve hydrolysis to glucose as compared with competing
technologies. Another key feature of our technology is to produce a
purified lignin stream that can then be sold as a valuable co-product
that we believe will equate to a profitable biorefining approach.
3) What will be the scale of the future cellulosic ethanol industry?
Will it require smaller, more decentralized facilities due to the cost of
feedstock logistics?
Yes. I also believe the cellulosic ethanol industry will evolve to where
decentralized biorefineries will transport via pipeline fermentation
sugars to a more centralized fermentation and distillation facility where
the biofuels will ultimately be produced.
